We Could Be Heroes
As per our tagline, Tatler is about celebrating life extraordinary. It’s not to say that the people featured have superhuman abilities the likes of DC and Marvel heroes—they are fictional characters after all, created to give people a role model that embodies perfection and everything we wish we could be—but, superpowers aside, we are also intrigued by these heroes’ personal struggles and how they rise above it in the call of duty. Superman’s enormous sense of responsibility for humankind weighs heavily on him as he struggles to find out where he fits in, on Earth or his native planet Krypton. Or what about Daredevil as he struggles to reconcile his feelings for Elektra, even though he knows he has to deal with her later? If you think about it, these so-called superheroes also deal with the same things everyone is dealing with: love, loss, pain, embarrassment, anxiety, desires, stress, etc. They’re basically just like regular folk who hide their real selves behind a mask, or a pair of glasses (Clark Kent, hello?). But what I’m getting at is, it is the things that they do— great feats which require some sort of inherent sacrifice on their part, that makes them extraordinary. As a lifestyle society magazine, we have been profiling people who have become successful by doing exceptional things, who are disrupters and blazed a path for others to follow. Inspiration begets inspiration, and we continue to scour the realm so we can shine their light, which has been hiding under a bushel. Self-starters, business moguls, altruistic souls, people who are making a difference or wanting to put their mark in the world. They bravely and persistently do what needs to be done, finding their passion in the process and achieving their goals, but not without enduring hardships, mind you. They are everyday heroes in our books. As is customary with each and every Tatler Ball, we honour such exemplary individuals during our awards presentation ceremony. Come November 4th, we will be bestowing the awards for Diamond of Excellence (for longstanding achievements and being an industry icon), Force For Good (a person with a heart of gold), Woman on the Rise (a feminine force who has the makings of success), Entrepreneur Par Excellence (a dynamic disruptor with a pulse on the market) and Couple of the Year (a power couple with a solid standing in society). If you received your coveted invite to the 28th Anniversary Tatler Ball, I look forward to seeing you there!
