Bubblebabies is dedicated to teaching kids the basics of swimming, and Carmen Tan speaks to Kathlyn D’souza on how they have been making a splash

What inspired Bubblebabies?

I wanted to build a community for other swim teachers to connect with one another, and enable parents to look for a swim coach if they need one. I had some parents ask me questions about what they can do with their child, and I came to realise that locally, we don’t have any channels for them to see how we teach, so I decided to start one. Bubblebabies [on Facebook] is where I post videos on how and why we do certain exercises—we have some exercises that parents can do with their children in the bathtub, then bring to the pool when they are ready. There are parents who watch the videos then contact me to join a class, or just ask for advice; I am always happy to share.

What qualifications or training do you have?

I have always liked water and fitness, and I have three PADI and one Les Mills Certification. It was my calling when I came across the Austswim Teaching Course, so I did my research and that’s where it all started. I took the Austswim teaching certification on both water safety and infant/ preschooler swimming. I urge parents to always ensure the teac teachers are certified, and also, also a certified lifeguard is nnot a certified teacher, whichwh is a common misconception. mis

Wherew and how can parentsp take part?

Theret are a few swim schoolss in KL with certified teachers, but I teach at my pool and at a local swim school. Parents who are keen should first visit my site to see what we do, so they don’t get a shock, and yes, registration is required as our groups are small, so each child gets enough personal attention. Basically you just need to come dressed and ready to sing nursery rhymes.

Why do you think this is important for families?

Firstly, it helps both parents and children understand the know-hows of water safety. And, this exercise also helps you bond with your child, which is important for their mental and emotional development. Plus, it keeps you healthy! It’s a good form of exercise for the whole family—it builds strength, muscle and the brain.

Do you have any tips for parents?

Don’t be afraid to do this even if you don’t know how to swim. I have parents ask if they need to know how to swim, and the answer is no. I always advise parents to be consistent. Swimming is a lifetime process and you can only see results when you are consistent. Be very patient, every child is different and we need to give them space.

Tips for home training perhaps?

Start slow and practice in the bathtub by using toys and cups. Don’t submerge your child without proper guidance, so please speak to a teacher before you attempt it. And the most important thing is to have fun!

What are your hopes and dreams for this little group?

That parents will be open to introducing swimming to their children. Through this platform, parents can understand the method and techniques, and be more assured. I also hope other teachers will join in and share their teaching style and tips.
