IN FASHION’S CLUTCHES Hui Ling of The Chic Initiative talks fashion inspo and her style
Bored of bulky bags? Then check out The Chic Initiative; as Siow Hui Ling shares what goes on behind the scenes of her brand, plus her fashion inspiration
While some people choose to live their lives inside their box, there are the few that choose to step out and take their chances. Polished and elegant, Siow Hui Ling transitioned from a corporate banking job to designing and selling one-of-a-kind minaudières under her label, The Chic Initiative—never looking back since. Today her clutches are stocked in Robinsons, Fashionvalet and Shoppes at Four Seasons Place as well as her own online store. Despite not having any formal training in designing or fashion, Hui Ling weaves her love for outfits with interesting texture, cut and form into her bags. “As a base, I go through fashion magazines and editorials to keep a pulse on what’s current and on-trend. I also refer to works of international stylists and tastemakers to see how they translate runway trends,” she enthuses. “Then I look in wards and always start with my interests, what I love most, and I draw inspiration from there. For example, my love for Italian opera translated to an Opera Collection, where our sequin, lace and cry stal series are inspired by elaborate and opulent stage costumes.” One could say she dresses with a purpose and a healthy dose of appreciation for the stories behind every item she owns. “One of my favourite designers is Roksanda Ilincic; I love her flair for shape, structure and silhouettes,” she gushes “The emerald green top I wore for the photo shoot is a nod to Roksanda’s iconic bell-sleeves. As for the other orange and pink colour-block pleated dress I wore for the shoot, it calls to mind the signature 1920’s flapper dresses of the Art Deco era.” Her go-to outfit is as she declares, “Something stylish and elegant that gives me confidence when I step out the door: a caped jack et, fitted cigarette pants and metallic heels, or an all-black ensemble with standout, pat ent red heels. Even a printed silk blouse with calf-length midi and stilettos.” Just like many of us, it t ook her a while t o find out what really spoke to her and the pieces she felt the best in. “Fashion to me is about ut self-expression and I feel I’m at a place where I am now comfortable with my sartorial choices,” Hui Ling explained.
