Woman of the Hour

Malaysia Tatler - - BEHIND THE SCENES -

Datin Dian Lee

It is hard to believe that Datin Dian Lee last graced our cover in 2007—when she was in her mid 20s, fresh after her wedding to businessman Datuk Jared Lim. “That was before children, the BC era,” she laughingly termed it, during a video interview we filmed last year for Malaysiatatler.com. This month, Datin Dian is returning to the front page of Malaysia Tatler, as the face of our 29th anniversary issue and the recipient of our Most Stylish Woman award. Dressed in a loose white shirt, denim shorts and jacket, Datin Dian looked effortlessly chic as she arrived for our 9am call time for hair and makeup. She had just returned from a diving trip with her family and sported a slight tan from the sun-soaked holidays. Her eyes lit up as she spotted the wardrobe full of the latest outfits from local designers, oohing and aahing at the fabrics, designs and silhouettes. “It’s an exciting time for Malaysian fashion right now and I am proud to be able to wear these pieces,” she says excitedly. To warm up for the photo shoot, she requested for photographer Aaron Lee to play a Spotify playlist she has been obsessed with— the Crazy Rich Asians soundtrack. Datin Dian, who had a two-second cameo in the film, visibly perked up when the playful tune of Jasmine Chen’s Wa Yao Ni De Ai came up on the speaker. “It’s been a wonderful, emotional l year for me. Being able to be a part of this Hollywood movie, celebrated for its all-asian n cast, tops it all off,” says our cover star. We then chatted about how she felt about t winning our Most Stylish Woman award, to which she replies, “I still can’t believe that Tatler picked me. But I am flattered to know that the award recognises style in terms of more than just clothes and fashion. That’s a philosophy that I believe in and therefore it makes this award even more special to me.” Turn to page 148 to read about her journey of rebirth and reinvention in the past decade.

Datin Dian’s brilliant personality is rivalled only by the Cartier jewellery she is wearing: Trinity de Cartier necklace, Cactus de Cartier earrings, and Coup d'éclat de Cartier ring
