Chairman of Halcyon Days, Pamela Harper enlightens us on ‘snuff boxes’ and why she can’t decide which British royal is her favourite

- BY AINA IZZAH

She protects, she collects and most importantly, she connects the past and the present. Pamela Harper walks us through the craftsmanship of the Halcyon Days jewellery

What does British craftsmanship mean to you in the modern age?

It is the heart of what Halcyon Days is all about. When we look at our brand, we think of a brand that protects heritage craftsmanship in England, and enamelling is the oldest British craft that many people don’t know about. It dates back to 17th and 18th century, when people carried snuff boxes. The ladies used them to dispense tissues and patches, or you could even keep mints and pills in them.

How did Halcyon Days develop into creating jewellery from enamel?

If you look back seven years ago, Halcyon Days has its heritage products which are the enamel boxes. Then, we decided on two things: One, to protect the heritage of Halcyon Days; and two, that we must remain within the Halcyon Days brand, and have products that people would feel are more relevant in their modern lives. Of course, one of those ways was jewellery. Whether they are bangles and watches for ladies or cufflinks for men. We set out a natural extension for our brand which has proven to be a very effective extension.

What were people’s reaction towards the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding collection by Halcyon Days last year?

It was well-received. We wanted to design something that we felt reflected the modernity of this couple. Therefore, we created the pattern of a garland of peonies on the products as it is what we believe are the Duchess of Sussex’s favourite flowers. However, the Royal family was not involved in the design, so there’s a lot of thought that had to be put in. We needed to ensure that it was relevant and the family would truly appreciate it.

Who would you say is your favourite Royal?

I don’t have one, I’m a true monarchist and very respectful of all members of the Royal family.

How does Halcyon Days have a place in the modern world when it is so intertwined with history?

I don’t think we are influenced by the past so much so, rather, we draw inspiration from it. We love to think that we are a brand at the heart of the British way of life and we take design cues from much of the beauty in our country, as I’m sure most designers do around the world. So, we have been inspired by the many stately homes in the United Kingdom like Gordon Castle in Scotland. I think there’s a way to do that and make it modern. In these modern environments, a quality, classical piece which is beautifully made can sit anywhere.
