Keeping It Simple

Having returned to the investment banking scene, this full-time mom is on the hustle 24/7, but never forgets to take a breather— and to take care of her sensitive skin

What was your first experience with beauty?

Zaida Ibrahim: My first memory was actually buying a children’s makeup set while on a holiday— that was over 20 years ago by the way, I can’t believe I still remember even going to the shop. And let me tell you a secret: I didn’t learn much about skincare or applying makeup properly until my 20s, and I only really started taking my skincare seriously about five years ago, which is something I truly regret starting late!

What’s your routine like after returning to investment banking and being a mother of two?

ZI: I definitely don’t have the time or patience for a 10-step skincare routine! I keep it simple because if it gets too complex, I won’t even bother to do it. So I do what I feel that works, and stick to something I feel like I can realistically be consistent with. I just wash my face, pat on serum and moisturise twice a day. If I feel like my face needs extra hydration, I’ll put on a mask.

Any cautionary tales you can share?

ZI: Ever since I was young, I’ve always had very sensitive skin and eczema, so I’m very careful with what I put on my face. If I ever use a new product, I try it on my hand for a few times, or a few days to see if there are any adverse reactions.

That isn’t to say that the products that cause irritation for me aren’t good though! It’s just not for me.

What’s the one product you’d never give up and swear by?

ZI: The Lancôme Genifique Serum is the best! It hydrates my skin very well and gives me that dewy glow. I even mix a drop into my foundation when applying my base makeup.

What are your stay-home beauty essentials?

ZI: It’s definitely the masks, because you can have it on while you’re on your Zoom calls (with the camera turned off, of course). Also, hand sanitisers with essential oils are amazing for those with sensitive skin like me.

What’s your one advice for the women hustling in times like these?

ZI: Keep going—but also know that it’s okay to pause and take a breather. And take time for yourself too. It’s a pretty tough time all things considered, and while it’s easy to only see the negative side of things, I think it’s best to appreciate the silver linings that we’re able to have and don’t take things for granted.
