Here are some of Malaysia’s biggest hits in the crypto scene

VISITHRA MANIKAM

Is a self-taught Malaysian artist who made headlines in November 2021 when she made Rm1.5mil from her NFTS, with Snoop Dogg being one of her many collectors, who owns The Medici Collection. In May 2022, her Opensea profile states that she traded over 105 ETH. She is also one of the speakers at NFT.NYC 2022, the largest, leading NFT conference in the world, to be held on June 20-23 at Times Square.

MEMEBANK

Is the brainchild of Red Hongyi, where six ‘meme-fied’ banknotes filled with well-known meme characters and crypto-related Easter eggs were created as a critique on present-day financial systems. You can find the collection and their hidden messages on memebank.live.

MIKE SHINODA

Co-founder of Linkin Park and recently appointed community innovation advisor for Warner Recorded Music, Shinoda bought local NFT artist mumu the stan’s (also known as ‘Moon’) first-ever NFT, which was a pixel art GIF of Shinoda’s own song called Booty Down. Since then, the NFT artist is now a well-known figure in the crypto scene and has gone on to create Malaysianf­t, a non-profit organisati­on that supports Malaysian artists in the digital space.

8SIAN

Is a women-led NFT project founded by Nicole Yap. Comprising 8,888 NFTS of beautiful illustrati­ons of Asian women, 8SIAN was ranked the number one project on Opensea in just 24 hours based on the percentage increase of the volume of ETH traded, which was at the time over 3,000 ETH. The project also collaborat­ed with renowned Malaysian pewter manufactur­er and retailer, Royal Selangor, creating the 8SIAN Jade Lady, both as an NFT and a beautiful pewter figurine (head over to p.70 to see what she looks like).

NFXT

Another renowned local NFT community, NFXT is co-founded by Ihsan Zolkipli and is a platform that seeks to empower as well as educate local artists on the rise, propelling them to the global digital stage and providing them the tools they need to move forward in the NFT space.

1.6 MILLION RINGGIT

Was how much Katun, a Malaysian graffiti artist, had sold his NFT collection for in just 24 hours. He sold out all 50 pieces of his limited edition NFT art—apes Stand Strong— on the Superfarm platform in less than 30 minutes for a total of 50 ETH, the equivalent of RM670,000 then, and then 776 pieces of his Mythical Fruits series in a day.
