‘Opposition’s attitude tarnishing country’s image’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The bad attitude of the opposition and their continuous call for the resignation of Datuk Seri Najib Razak as prime minister have only worsened the situation and tarnished the country’s good image.

Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the opposition pact should be more sensitive and not act hastily as it would send a negative message and perception to other countries.

“It was clear that Najib was not named as a defendant or alleged to have committed any criminal wrongdoing in the United States Department of Justice lawsuits with regard to 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd) assets.

“What else didn’t they (opposition) understand? Besides calling for Najib’s resignation, don’t they have any other topic to talk about?” he asked here yesterday.

He said Najib was aware of his responsibility to the country and was leading it to the best of his ability.

“As proof, he (Najib) has been keeping an open mind and said that the government would give its full cooperation to all international investigative bodies.”

Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin also rapped the opposition’s double standards, saying they turned a blind eye when many quarters demanded Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also DAP secretary-general, to resign following the corruption charges he is facing.

“When Lim was charged with corruption, the opposition pretended like nothing happened... Lim didn’t even resign. So why should they demand for the prime minister’s resignation now?

“Clearly, Lim was charged in court, but Najib was not even named in the lawsuit.”

Mas Ermieyati said as all eyes were on Malaysia right now, the people should stay united and strengthen their solidarity.

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said there was no need for an independent tribunal to be set up to investigate the US allegations, as proposed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said this was because the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had already investigated 1MDB.

“There is no need to set up a tribunal. We had the probe by the PAC, whose committee members comprised opposition representatives. Even the PAC’s vice-chairman, Tan Seng Giaw of DAP, had said Najib was not directly involved in the 1MDB issue.” Bernama
