PKR NOT CONVINCED
DAP yesterday failed to get support from ally PKR for a snap election in Penang. PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says the central committee is not convinced by the DAP proposal, and that further discussions are needed.
THOUGH Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is convinced that snap elections should be held in the state, PKR is anything but.
Yesterday, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the party remained unconvinced that snap elections should be called in Penang.
She said a three-hour special meeting of the party’s central committee, called to discuss the matter, had unanimously decided on this stand.
Dr Wan Azizah said the party was keen to extend its support for DAP as a coalition partner. Therefore, it would continue holding discussions with DAP, of which Lim was secretary-general, over the issue of snap elections.
“Following extensive deliberation, including taking into account the views of civil society, the meeting has unanimously decided that PKR is not convinced by the proposal,” she said.
Dr Wan Azizah said PKR would send a high-ranking delegation to Penang in due course.
Lim had proposed the snap elections following calls for him to step down after he was charged with abuse of power and corruption over the alleged approval of a rezoning application to convert agricultural land to residential and the purchase of a RM2.8 million house below market value.
PKR was the first to issue a statement over the issue after it was brought to light. Then, as yesterday, it had said it was unconvinced of the need for snap elections in Penang.
Its Pakatan Harapan partner, Parti Amanah Negara, took a while to deliberate on the issue, but yesterday said it had no problems with snap elections being held in Penang.
