Ex-NST production editor dies at 72

KUALA LUMPUR: Former New Straits Times (NST) production editor Khoo Kay Peng died at his home in Subang Jaya yesterday. He was 72.

His brother, Kay Soon, said the family discovered him on the floor of his house at 7pm.

“He was absent from work, so we got worried and checked his house only to find his body on the floor. The ambulance (paramedics) confirmed that he had been dead for more than 12 hours but they were not certain of the cause,” he said.

Kay Soon said the cause of death could have been heart failure or stroke.

“Kay Peng had undergone a bypass surgery more than 12 years ago and he was also suffering from hypertension,” he said.

Kay Soon said his brother’s position as an associate editor at a local business newspaper meant that he would normally wake up in the afternoon.

This was why the family became worried and went to check on him only around 7pm.

Kay Soon said his brother was soft-spoken and quiet, adding that he was popular among those in the industry.

“He was well-known in the industry for his layouts and had held many positions, one of which was production editor at NST. He was in the industry for more than 30 years.”

Former NST business editor K.H. Lim remembered Kay Peng as a “silent hero” of open-space layout with clean fonts and typefaces.

“Even while at news desk in my earlier days in 1980s, I was a sub-editor for the New Sunday Times and I always enjoyed learning from him. A man of few words, Kay Peng was a maestro in his quiet, efficient way. Journos past and present will miss him.”

A wake will be held at the Nirvana Memorial Centre in Sungai Besi starting today. The funeral is on Friday at 11am.
