- HALIM SAID

PASIR GUDANG: GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the business operator of Giant Hypermarkets in Malaysia, has put down a RM38 million investment to upgrade its 18year-old outlet in Plentong to become a new neighbourhood mall.

GCH Retail chief executive officer Pierre Deplanck said the move to upgrade the popular outlet to become The Giant Plentong Mall was timely as the company moved towards creating a fresh look for the hypermarket.

He said the new look of the Plentong branch entailed the construction of 156 new retail lots inside the building with 46,451.52 sq m of space.

The newly-upgraded building is equipped with 1,800 visitors parking bays.

He said a large aquarium would be the centrepiece and new attraction in the mall.

Among the popular brand names taking up tenancy at the mall are Courts, Lionmas, Nagoya, Old Town White Coffee, Subway and Yum Yum Shabu.

“The combination of additional retailers and the Giant hypermarket as the mall’s anchor tenant will give consumers a wide variety of choice. The move to upgrade the mall is a positive move in Giant’s business operation,” he said.

Deplanck said the investment in Plentong was crucial for the company in meeting market demand for “wholesome shopping experiences”.

He said the Plentong outlet catered for the needs of 300,000 residents in the area.

Earlier, GCH Retail presented a RM50,000 contribution to 50 families through the MyKasih Foundation and another RM5,000 to the Srikandi Regalia welfare home under its corporate social responsibility programme.

Tunku Tun Aminah Sultan Ibrahim presented the mock cheques to recipients.
