Three children among eight dead in crash

KOTA BELUD: Three children were among eight people killed in a gruesome crash involving four vehicles at Jalan Kampung Pandasan here yesterday.

The 6am collision involved a Proton Saga, Proton Gen2, Toyota Hilux and Perodua Kancil.

Five of the seven passengers of the Proton Saga who were killed were identified as Aidil Abd Jumat, 8, Nursukah Abd Jumat, 3, Vera Adira Jalius, 6, Neta Ramlan, 37, and Hamira Mohamad Salleh, 39.

The remaining two passengers in the car sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the district hospital.

Three others who died were travelling in the Proton Gen 2, which collided with the Proton Saga. They were identified as Lance Corporal Herlin Naxe Jefferey, 26, Ellyzek Johnny, 28, and Frenwell Jefferey, 31.

District police chief Deputy Superinten­dent Zaidi Abdullah said Herlin was attached to the Klang Selatan police headquarte­rs.

“Based on the preliminar­y investigat­ion, the Proton Gen2 was heading towards Kota Marudu while the Proton Saga was travelling towards Kota Belud.

“The Proton Gen2 driver was believed to have lost control of the car and crashed into the oncoming Proton Saga.

“At the same time, the Perodua Kancil and Toyota Hilux drivers, who were behind the Saga, swerved their vehicles to avoid crashing into the other cars and both landed in a drain.”

Zaidi said the Perodua Kancil driver sustained minor injuries while the other driver escaped unhurt.

The district Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 5.59am and deployed 11 personnel to extricate victims from the wreckage.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
