Bronze for tired Zhiayi

-

A TIRED Loh Zhiayi earned her second ever individual medal in the World Grand Prix by claiming the bronze in the women’s 10m platform in Kuching yesterday.

The 19-year-old won a bronze in the Singapore leg in 2014 and she repeated the feat at the Sarawak Aquatics Centre in Petra Jaya yesterday with a five-dive total of 285.55 points.

China grabbed the gold and silver through Lian Jie (302.65) and Xia Bingqing (298.25), respectively.

The total score posted by Zhiayi, a two-time Sea Games silver medallist, is far off her best as she consistently garners between 300 and 350 points in competitions.

“It was tough for me as my legs were swollen from the recent training stint in China. I had rested for two months prior to the two-week training stint and my legs swelled from poor landings into the pool,” said Zhiayi.

Earlier, Zhiayi finished second in the semi-final ‘A’ with 242.05 while Kimberly Bong failed to make the final by posting 216.20 for fourth position in semi-final ‘B’

In the men’s 3m springboard final, Chew Yiwei took fifth with an errorprone 371.60 points. China’s Xie Siyi won on 479.15 ahead of his teammate Peng Jianfeng who took silver with 421.45, followed by Australian Kevin Chavez (397.65).

Ahmad Amsyar Azman failed to reach the final in the event he had competed in at the Rio Olympics. He finished fourth in semi-final ‘B’ with a poor 332.35. By Ajitpal Singh
