Parit’s timely reminder

-

The

is a symbol of patriotism. THE article about the clock tower in Parit, Perak, last Sunday caught my attention as I was born and educated at the town’s only English school, Iskandar Shah School.

I am proud of my hometown, especially of the friendship among the various races, which in those days, was cohesive. I remember the unity and goodwill among us from my school days.

I remember the Yee Fatt coffeeshop which I frequented when I followed my late father to join Thangavelu, a JKR overseer and Ah Yong, a bicycle dealer, to enjoy hailam delicacies.

Everyone sent their children to the only English school there. Polarity was never on their minds.

The clock tower is indeed a symbol of the community’s patriotism and unity. I am proud that Parit has a clock tower donated by the people, but it is rather sad to see the plaque dilapidated and the names of the donors barely visible.

One of them, whom I know, was Encik (later Datuk) Liew Why Hone, a well-known architect. The plaque should be upgraded.

As I was among the pioneer committee members of the Iskandarian Old Boys Association Parit, I believe the current association committee can assist in kind and deed for the town’s heritage.
