UM wins moot court competition

-

UNIVERSITY of Malaya (UM) clinched top spot at the 1st Moot Court Competition on Competition Law Act 2010, organised by the Malaysia Competitions Commission (MyCC) recently.

The team, comprising final-year law student Sharon Kaur Jessy, thirdyear law students Nadiah Aiman Nazri, Vinodhan Kuppusamy and Lisa Natasha Fakhrul Hamdi as well as second-year law undergraduate Hanan Khaleeda Fadzil defeated the team from the International Islamic University Malaysia to become champions to take home RM3,000 in prize and a trophy.

Sharon was also awarded the Final’s Best Oralist.

The team attributed their success to the continuous support from the dean of the law faculty, Associate Professor Dr Johan Shamsuddin Sabaruddin, his deputy, Dr Nadhratul Wardah Salman and moot coordinator Steward Manley — all of whom have consistently encouraged the students to take part in extra-curricular activities such as moots.

A moot competition is an extracurricular activity at many law schools in which law students take part in simulated court proceedings, which usually involves drafting memorials and participating in oral arguments.

MyCC was established in 2011 to safeguard the process of free and fair competition in commercial markets for the benefit of consumer welfare, efficiency of enterprises and the development of the economy as a whole.

It investigates complaints on anticompetition behaviours, carries out market reviews and imposes penalties on companies found to infringe the competition law.

It also has the authority to impose fees or charges for services provided; grant loans, scholarships and advances to its employees; cooperate with any corporate body or government agency and request information from enterprises to assist in the performance of its functions; or perform any tasks incidental to its functions and powers.
