Wealthy PKR leader mulls defamation suit against Jamal

-

AMPANG: Ampang PKR Youth chief Datuk Adam Rosly, who is at the centre of a controversy over the legitimacy of his wealth, has threatened to take legal action against Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos for allegedly defaming him.

Speaking at a press conference here yesterday, Adam said he would discuss with his lawyer and seek legal recourse once the authorities had completed their investigation on him.

Adam brushed aside claims that he joined politics for personal gain, saying he had accumulated his wealth after becoming a businessman 10 years ago.

However, he declined to reveal the nature of his business, saying it was a private matter.

“I will reveal the details of my business to the authorities to assist their investigations,” he said, adding that he would extend his full cooperation to the police, Inland Revenue Board and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Adam also said he would not heed PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli’s advice to declare his assets, unless he was ordered to do so by the party leadership.

“I agree with his (Rafizi’s) suggestion, but what need is there for me to declare my wealth? I am not a civil servant. If I am ordered to do so, I will declare (my wealth) down to the last sen.”

Responding to a question regarding his datukship, Adam said he received the title from the Pahang palace this year and was conferred the award after conducting several business projects in the state.

On his purported wealth, Adam reiterated that he had successful business ventures after inheriting his father’s businesses, and that he had been interested in making money from a young age.

“In school, I sold nasi lemak, water and mangoes.

“Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), I saved up some money and started my own business and I was able to afford a (Proton) Perdana at the age of 19.”

Adam, 28, had shared multiple photos of luxury cars and a KTM 200 Duke motorcycle on his Instagram account.

His Instagram account features photos of a Mercedes-Benz CLA250 and CLS, BMW Z4, Mini Cooper and Range Rover Evoque. His account has since been kept “private”.

His apparent wealth came under public scrutiny after Jamal, who is also Sungai Besar Umno division chief, chartered a helicopter to survey Adam’s bungalow here.

Jamal had insinuated that the PKR youth leader had become rich only after joining the party, a claim vehemently denied by Adam.

“I deny in the strongest term that I am a proxy of Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and Ampang member of parliament Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“Jamal must prove that I have benefited from projects given by the Selangor government.”

He also denied claims that he only had an SPM qualification, saying he had academic qualifications beyond that of a degree holder.
