(top) and Kimberly Bong NATIONAL divers Loh Zhiayi-Kimberly Bong continued Malaysia’s impressive show at the Asian Swimming Championships in Tokyo when they bagged the bronze medal in the women’s 3m springboard synchro yesterday.

The Malaysians chalked up 220.41 points after five dives to finish behind gold medal winners Lian Jie-Si Yanjie (328.44) of China and Japan’s Nana Sasaki-Arai Matsuri.

It was Zhiayi-Kimberly’s second podium finish after clinching the bronze medal at the Australian leg of the Fina Diving Grand Prix earlier this month.

In the men’s 3m springboard, Chew Yiwei — who won silver in the synchro event on Thursday — settled for fourth after recording 395.15 points.

China’s Peng Jianfeng claimed the gold medal on 479.00 points, followed by Japan’s Sho Sakai (444.70) and Haruki Suyama (418.70).

In swimming, Olympian Welson Sim was far off his personal best as he only managed a time of 3mins55.51s to finish sixth in the men’s 400m freestyle.

Welson has a personal best of 3:50.33s, which is also the national record.

Former Olympic champion Park Tae Hwan of South Korea came out tops after clocking 3:44.68s followed by Japan’s Tsubasa Amai (3:51.09s) and China’s Qiu Ziao (3:51.74s).

“I think I didn’t do too bad so I’m okay. First of all, it is not so easy to reach the final,” said Welson when contacted in Japan. By Fabian Peter
