MANY people would have come to a stage in their lives when they are dragging themselves to do something because they have to. This includes going to work, school or even facing their families.

Gone is the fire that used to burn so bright. This may have happened for various reasons such as burnout or personal and relationship issues. Whatever the reason, we cannot go on living like this or life will become dull, boring and draggy.

When this feeling sets in, it’s time to take action. We need to find the spark to reignite the fire so that we can restart and refresh our outlook on life in general and on our work, in particular. Actually, the solution can be found in the word FIRE. The word can be expanded to mean focus, ideas/ideals, responsiveness and enthusiasm. Let’s explore what each means.

FOCUS: We may feel demotivated when we lose focus of our goals. This can happen for various reasons. Maybe there is no goal to begin with. In this case, life just feels like a drifting ship, pulled by strong currents on all sides. However, if one has a goal but fails to stick to it, the same effect may be produced. It is, therefore, critical to not only have a goal but also to stick to it. This is the only way to keep focusing on the future without feeling lost and adrift.

IDEAS AND IDEALS: Do you remember when you were younger and full of ideas and ideals? We were unstoppable. We strived to change the world in our own ways. Unfortunately for many, as the years go by, the challenges and barriers that arise eventually consume them. They end up not bothering to try or even question anymore.

To reignite the fire, we must look back once in a while to remind us of the important things in life. We need to remind ourselves about what it is that we are fighting for and then find ways to keep those alive. It’s fine to take a break when the going gets tough but never stop altogether.

ENTHUSIASM: Perhaps the most visible sign of being burntout is the lack of enthusiasm. It’s hard to feel excited about the things that used to keep us awake at night. We may stop doing activities that we used to enjoy so much. Life appears to have taken a different turn but it’s definitely not in the right direction.

If you experience any of the above, you owe it to yourself and your family to regain control. Believe that you can reignite the fire by moving into a positive zone and start taking action. Don’t let negativity pull you further.

You may need a partner who can push you and keep you on the right path towards your goals. As long as the fire is kept burning bright for years to come, there is hope.
