Working harder for the people

-

Question: How do you view the sacking of former Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir from Umno?

Answer: Leaders come and go. What needs to be emphasised is the party’s struggles and objectives. The sacking of high-ranking leaders in Umno due to disciplinary issues is nothing new. Action must be taken to ensure the party remains strong. The rules must be enforced without fear or favour.

Question: Umno will face a new set of opponents in the next general election compared with previous polls. How would you describe this test particularly for the Wanita wing? Answer: Traditionally, Pas would be the main opponent for Umno. But with the new set of political parties, it will bring about a new challenge for us. We need to double our effort through Jalinan Rakyat (a cooperation platform between Umno wings), campaigns and other programmes, in order to explain issues to party grassroots and the people in Kedah.

Question: Do you see the Pakatan Harapan pact posing a challenge to Umno and the Barisan Nasional in the next general election? Answer: Despite facing constant challenges, including losing power in a few states, BN continues to receive the people’s mandate to form the government. Our ratings have improved. For example, thanks to our solid cohesiveness, we managed to regain Kedah in the 13th General Election after losing the state in 2008. BN remains as the best political and governance model in term of power sharing between the races. This is significant to spur the country’s economy, ensuring stability and harmony.

Question: What are the pressing issues Kedah Umno wishes to raise at the party’s general assembly this year, with the possibility of the 14th General Election being held next year? Answer: Assuming the election is to be held next year, we will focus on three core objectives. The first would be solidarity among members and leaders as the main factor to strengthen the party. The second, increasing programmes with the people and for the people. This is in line with Umno’s DNA which centres on championing the people’s interests. The third would be to increase registration of voters, building a close rapport with fence-sitters and young voters.

Question: What do you hope to hear from the party leadership in the general assembly?

Answer: Leaders should rally members to work harder especially if the general election is just around the corner. They need to send a clear message to ensure stability and prosperity, as well as a realistic vision on the country’s direction. As for leaders themselves, they must assert their integrity so as to build the people’s confidence in them.
