RM150,000 awaits winner of Mountain Dew’s Dota 2 challenge
KUANTAN: Malaysia’s biggest amateur online gaming tournament, Mountain Dew’s 2016 Dew Challenge, raged on yesterday with the state capital here playing host to 32 teams.
Following the success of last year’s maiden edition, the highly anticipated challenge of the popular Dota 2 tournament this year offers a prize of RM150,000 for the national-level champion in the final scheduled for Dec 10 and 11.
Etika Sdn Bhd marketing and business development vice-president R. Hemalatha said Penang was the first state to kick off the regional challenge, with some 100 participants taking part, followed by Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
She said upon the completion of the two-day challenge in Pahang today, the competition would travel to Johor, where teams would battle on the weekend of Nov 25 and 26.
“Selected teams from the Dota 2 challenge will compete in the group stage on Dec 9, before the top eight teams battle in the grand final on Dec 10.
“A mobile gaming challenge, which offers prizes totalling RM50,000, is introduced this year to bring more excitement.
“Mountain Dew created this online gaming arena and the mobile game application as a platform for gaming enthusiasts to channel their passion.
“The games have huge followers, with hopeful participants eagerly waiting for an opportunity to join the contest despite knowing the allocated spots have been snapped up,” Hemalatha said yesterday.
She said Dota 2 and e-gaming required intense training and endurance
Pix by for players to emerge victorious, hence, participants could boost their energy with Mountain Dew during the game.
“Teams often go through rigorous practice and strategy meetings spanning more than 40 hours a week.
“The dedication and commitment that gamers have towards their skills is reflective of the Mountain Dew brand belief of pushing Malaysians beyond their limits.
“We are extremely excited to be organising the challenge and look forward to having participants spend time with their families and friends who gather to support their involvement in the gaming event.”
The venue of the regional challenge at Kuantan Square was packed to the brim yesterday as gamers hoped for a chance to replace registered teams that did not turn up.
