Pic by Mohd Azren Jamaludin THE inaugural Laksamana Trophy Charity Golf Tournament 2016, which is aimed at raising RM1.5 million for cancer research and treatment, is set to become one of the most coveted annual charity golf events in Malaysia.

Under the patronage of Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Saturday’s event will involve 120 golfers comprising captains of industry, corporate heads, entrepreneurs, Johor senior state government officials and members of the golfing fraternity.

Sultan Ibrahim, who unveiled the tournament’s trophy at Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Baru on Friday, said the charity golf tournament was meant to bring benefits to the people, and will greatly contribute to the work of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation.

The idea for the tournament was mooted by renowned Johorean architect Tan Sri Esa Mohamad. It was named in honour of the ruler’s late son, Tunku Laksamana Johor Tunku Abdul Jalil Sultan Ibrahim who died of liver cancer last year.

“It is meant to raise funds for the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation, and I think we will be able to collect a nice amount.

“Almarhum (Tunku Abdul Jalil) liked to look after others. He knew he was sick, but he liked to sedekah (to be charitable),” said Sultan Ibrahim.

The tournament, organised by the Johor Golf Tourism Association (JGTA), will be held at the newlyopened 27-hole The Els Club Desaru Coast — The Ocean in Kota Tinggi, a facility designed by former World No 1 golfer Ernie Els.

Prizes include two Porsche Macan luxury cars and two Maxus G10 multipurpose vehicles, courtesy of the Weststar Group.

The ruler’s Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle with JSA1 registration plate will be among items up for a charity auction.

Sultan Ibrahim and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin are among those who are expected to take part in the tournament.
