PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak says the government is prepared to increase the allocation to build subsidised homes under the 1Malaysia People Friendly Home (RMR1M) scheme. About 36,000 homes have been built since 2002 under the programme, in which the government subsidises RM31,000 for every home built.

THE government is ready to increase the allocation to build subsidised homes under the 1Malaysia People Friendly Homes (RMR1M) programme due to high demand.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said since the programme was introduced in 2002, 36,454 homes had been built.

“This is a very popular scheme. I’ve told Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) chairman that we are willing to increase the allocation to build more homes under the programme.”

For every unit, the government subsidises RM20,000 and provides a financing subsidy of RM11,000.

“So, for every house that costs RM65,000, we subsidise RM31,000,” he said after launching this year’s RMR1M programme, themed “10,000 Hasrat, Satu Impian” in Kampung Bukit Changgang near here yesterday.

RMR1M was introduced to help those with a monthly income of between RM750 and RM3,000, such as farmers, fishermen and villagers, who own land, but have no house.

The homes are usually three-bedroom houses, with two bathrooms and a built-up area of 1,000 sq ft, and adhere to specifications by local authorities and the Uniform Building By-law.

SPNB has received more than 84,000 applications for RMR1M since its inception in 2002.

Previously, the repayment rate for units was set at RM150 a month, but after adjustments last year, the rate was set at RM270 a month, with a repayment period of 25 years.

“This is still relatively low. On average, in Dengkil and Kuala Langat, rent is between RM600 and RM700 a month,” Najib said.

He said applications would be approved in stages and applicants should expect a waiting time of up to two years.

“If we can, we will increase the allocation and reduce waiting time.”

He said there were about 3,000 skilled Class F contractors who could build good quality homes fast.

Besides home owners, Najib said, the scheme would also benefit contractors, suppliers and lawyers.

Earlier, Najib presented the RMR1M Certificate of Eligibility to 10 applicants residing here to symbolise the 10,000 houses that would be built by SPNB this year.

He also presented an award to the sole pupil who scored straight As in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah from SK Rancangan Tanah Belia Bukit Changgang, Naqiatul Zulaikha Tajul Faizal.

Present were Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar, Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, SPNB chairman Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad, Dengkil assemblyman Sharum Sharif and Sepang Umno division chief Datuk Marsum Paing.
