TROUBLED: Kelantan Umno to table motion at general assembly to protest violence against Rohingya
KELANTAN Umno will table a motion to protest the violence and atrocities against the ethnic Rohingya in Myanmar at the 2016 Umno General Assembly.
Kelantan Umno chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said it would bring up the motion as the situation in Myanmar also affected the state.
“Due to the restive situation in Myanmar, we get the spillover effect, with thousands of Rohingya entering Malaysia, including Kelantan,” he said.
He was speaking after presenting the excellent student award to those in the Jeli parliamentary constituency who had excelled in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah this year.
Mustapa, who is also international trade and industry minister, said Malaysians were troubled and saddened over the violence taking place in Rakhine state against the Rohingya.
“We encountered a similar situation some years back when thousands of Rohingya fled Myanmar during unrest and turmoil in the country.
“At that time, thousands fled to Malaysia, including Kelantan. Many were under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees programme.”
He said, as mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Malaysia would conduct discussions to look for solutions and voice out its stand against such violence towards the Rohingya people.
“The implications will be felt in Malaysia if nothing is done soon.
“We find it hard to tolerate any cruelty on animals, what more when it involves the priceless life of a fellow human being,” he said.
Mustapa said the motion and the debate was expected to take place on Thursday.
