The giant sinkhole, which was produced by the landslide, is covered with tarpaulin and the surrounding area has been cordoned off.

Hulu Selangor district police chief Superintendent R. Supramaniam said people were not allowed to enter the landslide area, which covered a radius of 600m, and must use a traffic detour set up for residents.

As of 4pm yesterday, he said 27 of the 64 families affected were seeking shelter at Sekolah Rendah Agama Serendah and there were 131 victims at the temporary shelter.

He said officials were in the midst of looking for five families who had yet to register with the relief centre.

Supramaniam said these families were probably staying with relatives.

It is learnt that a victim suffered an epileptic seizure following the incident and was taken to hospital.

A visit by the New Straits Times to the site yesterday saw work being done to remove soil to stabilise the earth and prevent further erosion.

“Steel-piling work has been under way for the past 24 hours to strengthen the soil.

“Technical teams from the Public Works, Drainage and Irrigation, and Minerals and Geoscience departments are also working on site,” Supramaniam said.

There are 28 police officers and 17 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department in the area.
