Centre in KUALA LUMPUR: A clear direction has been set for Barisan Nasional component parties ahead of the next general election.

This was part of the policy speech delivered by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the 70th Umno general assembly here yesterday.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Najib’s messages provided a platform for component parties to prepare for the 14th General Election (GE14).

“What’s more important is that we are united in our hearts to face the opposition, as well as those who had betrayed the party and coalition,” said Liow, who is also transport MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam,

“As for BN as a whole, Umno’s struggles must be inclusive and ensure that the country’s multiracial unity remains intact,” he said at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam echoed Liow’s sentiment, saying that he welcomed Najib’s message about staying united as a coalition when facing GE14.

The health minister said Umno’s agenda in catering to the people's needs, regardless of religion and race, showed that the party was upholding the spirit of working together in accordance with the BN constitution.

“He (Najib) also stressed that the rights of non-Muslims will be protected,” he said after Najib delivered his speech.

Gerakan’s secretary-general Datuk Liang Teck Meng said the party had identified potential candidates and was ready to face GE14, no matter when it would be held.

“We have conducted workshops during the past few months on how our members can organise their machineries and on improving their public-speaking skills.

“We have started doing our job, so no matter when GE14 is, be it next year or the year after, Gerakan is ready,” he said.
