‘City Hall involved only in planning approval’
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz yesterday moved to disavow any connection between City Hall, and the technical and safety issues related to the collapsed pedestrian bridge near Mid Valley Megamall.
He said the local authority was only involved in the planning approval for the project.
Amin said the technical and safety issues were under the purview of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), which would carry out risk assessment studies and monitor the quality of the materials used to construct the bridge.
“In terms of supervision on site, there are many parties involved. It is the responsibility of the contractor and the consultant to ensure that there are engineers stationed on site,” he said after opening the 47th Enforcement Agencies Appreciation Ceremony at Menara DBKL.
Amin said the stop-work order issued on Wednesday was only for the construction of the bridge and would be in effect until further notice.
“The developer is allowed to clean up the site of the collapsed bridge while waiting for the investigation to conclude. DOSH and CIDB are investigating the cause of the bridge collapse,” he said, adding that the investigation report would take a long time to conclude.
KL Eco City developer SP Setia will foot the bill for the medical costs and compensation for those affected by the incident.
On another matter, Amin Nordin said clean-up bills have been sent to the organisers of last month’s Bersih 5 and Red Shirts rallies.
