Abused girl can open eyes

-

ALOR STAR: The 4-year-old girl, who is an alleged abuse victim and was rescued from the Paya Nahu Flats last Thursday, can open her eyes again.

Kedah Health Department director Datuk Dr Norhizan Ismail told the New Straits Times that the swelling around the victim’s eyes and face had begun to subside.

“She is showing positive developments and is placed under observation by specialist doctors at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital,” he said yesterday.

He added that the girl was placed under the care of a paediatric psychiatric specialist to evaluate her trauma level, and the specialist is coming up with treatments such as expressive arts therapy.

“The girl is adapting well to the nurses at the ward and she has been checked by the ear, nose and throat specialist.

“She is under the care of a child protection officer from the Welfare Department and we have yet to set a date for her to be discharged.”

The girl would be placed under the care of her maternal grandmother upon her discharge.

Last Thursday, police made a gruesome discovery of her 2-year-old brother, whose decomposing body was found in a cooler box at the Paya Nahu Flats, when the authorities were responding to a domestic disturbance call.

The boy is believed to have died two weeks prior to the discovery of his body, while the girl had multiple injuries on the face and body.

Police had detained the children’s 26-year-old mother and her 34year-old boyfriend, whom she claimed was responsible for the abuse of the children.

On Wednesday, police obtained a week-long remand extension against the couple, who tested positive for drug abuse.
