THE Star Wars film franchise, which first began in 1977, boasts seven successful feature films to-date.

Having garnered a total of 27 Academy Awards nominations (with seven wins), these make up the episodic Star Wars saga; two more episodes, Episode XIII and Episode IX, have yet to be released.

On top of the main saga, there are also other standalone movies in the Star Wars universe; these are known as the Star Wars anthology series.

The series’ first motion picture Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will open in cinemas on Dec 15.

In conjunction with this, Golden Screen Cinemas is offering limited edition Star Wars T-shirts conceptualised from the Star Wars graffiti art found in GSC Mid Valley Megamall, painted by local street artist Mahathir Masri, better known as They.

The T-shirts were recently unveiled at the GSC Rogue Vogue fashion show, with 28 interesting interpretations of the two designs by four fashion designers: The award-winning Jimmy Lim, Calvin Thoo, Nerd Unit, and Stoned & Co.

Incorporating the T-shirts into their designs, the four labels had creative ideas which resulted in exclusive renditions of Star Wars-inspired streetwear for both men and women.

METICULOUS ATTENTION

From Nerd Unit’s military-inspired, tough-looking dark jackets to Calvin Thoo’s softer feminine cuts embellished with glittering beads — each ensemble reflects meticulous attention to detail and is distinctively quirky yet stylish.

While Jimmy Lim, Nerd Unit and Stoned & Co. featured eye-catching outfits for both genders, Calvin Thoo was the odd man out with his unique collection of designs for women only.

A Star Wars fan since young, Thoo decided to add a dash of colour and glamour to the T-shirts while customising the silhouette to be more fitted to suit the contours of the female physique.

“I wanted to do something fun and funky so I combined streetwear with different elements such as French net, ribbons and shiny colourful stones, while adding some Asian influence into the designs,” he said.

He also paired the black and white T-shirts with skirts in pink, gold, and grey respectively.

The overall outcome? The simple article of clothing blossomed into delightful ensembles that bring out the femininity of the wearers, thanks to his imaginative adaptations.

“In keeping with our signature touch, we have a lot of bead- ings too,” added Thoo, who is renowned for his stunning creations which have adorned the likes of Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Anita Sarawak, Datuk Sheila Majid and Erra Fazira to name a few.

Some of the designs from the four labels are on display at GSC Mid Valley Megamall until Dec 16, 2016.

Star Wars fans can also get these limited-edition T-shirts by purchasing the special e-combo (RM38.90) via the GSC Mobile App. Each e-combo comes with a regular popcorn-and-soft drink set and a special edition T-shirt, available in either black or white.

DEEPER MEANING

Specially made for a charitable cause, the proceeds of the T-shirt sale will benefit Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Cornerstone, a children’s home in Semenyih, Selangor.

One of the Rogue Vogue fashion show’s main highlights was the live demonstration of They’s graffiti-making onstage while the models paraded the four labels’ designs. With cool deliberate sprays of colours, he transformed the monotonous canvas into a vibrant sight to behold by the time the show ended.

Recently, They coloured the walls of the cinema with characters from his favourite movies, such as Star Wars, Fast And Furious and Marvel superhero movies, infusing his own graffiti style in the process — a combination that represents a distinctive part of the pop culture art movement in Malaysia.

Aside from They, GSC is also working with more homegrown street and graffiti artists to deck the walls of other GSC locations such as GSC IOI City Mall and GSC Ipoh Parade with more movie-related art.

“I wanted to do something fun and funky so I combined streetwear with different elements such as the French net, ribbons, and shiny colourful stones.”
