Ex-FT minister Zulhasnan is new envoy to the US
KUALA LUMPUR: Former cabinet minister Tan Sri Dr Zulhasnan Rafique, 62, has been appointed as the new Malaysian ambassador to the United States.
The Foreign Ministry yesterday said Zulhasnan would replace Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, who has served as Malaysian ambassador to the US since April 2014.
Prior to his appointment, Zulhasnan served as federal territories minister from 2006 to 2009, and as deputy minister for the same portfolio from 2004 to 2006.
He also served as Wangsa Maju member of parliament from 1999 to 2004, before being elected as Setiawangsa MP from 2004 to 2013.
During his tenure as federal territories minister, Zulhasnan saw through the creation of a strategic plan that focused on development for all three Federal Territories.
Zulhasnan joined the Royal Malaysian Air Force as a fighter pilot and retired in 1985 with the rank of major before entering politics.
He is married to Puan Sri Siti Nooriah Razak. They have three children.
On his appointment, he said he was committed to delivering the best service and contribution towards achieving the MalaysiaUS bilateral relations’ aspirations and objectives.
He noted that the US was one of the world’s biggest economies and the most advanced superpower.
“I view my appointment as a clear sign of intent by the prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) and the leadership to continue, elevate and strengthen the good relationship between Malaysia and the US that has existed since our nation’s independence.”
He recorded his appreciation to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V and Najib for their faith in appointing him as Malaysia’s envoy in Washington.
“This appointment is a call of duty and a decree on me to represent the leadership and Malaysians.”
Awang believed his successor would be able to ensure that the relationship between Malaysia and the US remained strong.
“He (Zulhasnan) will be an effective ambassador for Malaysia due to his experience as a former minister.
“This will earn him respect among the diplomatic community in Washington.”
