RM48.5m: 60,700 gambling machines seized in Selangor

PBernama pic OLICE seized RM48.5 million worth of computers that were modified into gambling machines in Selangor between January and Dec 27 this year.

State police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said 60,669 machines were confiscated in 4,828 raids carried out in the state.

“Police arrested 4,438 caretakers

at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council impound of gambling premises and 1,473 punters to assist investigations.”

Police seized RM424,118 during the raids.

Abu Samah said it was challenging for police to curb the problem as the number of online gambling premises kept on increasing over the year, as the returns were high.

“Police and the local councils are working hand-in-hand to tackle the problem,” he said, adding that not a day went by without arrests in regard to online gambling.

Abu Samah said this after witnessing the disposal of gambling machines worth RM4.4 million at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council impound lot here.

Police had obtained a court order to destroy the machines which were confiscated between 2014 and March this year.

The machines were disposed of following a directive from the Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court after the owners of the illegal machines were charged in court and punishment meted out.

Abu Samah said police would continue monitoring illegal gambling activities on a daily basis.

Subang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Azlin Sadari said the crime rate index in the district had shown a decrease in the last 10 months since he assumed the position.

“Some 166 cases were recorded from March this year, which is a 7.45 per cent drop compared with the same period previously,” he said.
