THE death of a 3-yearold boy at the hands of his father and the man’s girlfriend three years ago saw closure when the High Court yesterday sentenced them to death.

Former company manager Mohd Imran Mohd Ramly, 34, and his girlfriend, Norhidayah Mamid, 30, were found guilty of murdering Muhammad Aqeef Adam.

The toddler died due to physical abuse when he was under the care of his father, Imran, who is divorced and had shared custody of the toddler.

Judicial commissioner Collin Lawrence Sequerah said the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt against the duo’s abusive acts that led to the toddler’s death.

“Both of them had a common intention to inflict injuries on the victim. Based on testimonies and circumstantial evidence, I find both accused guilty of the offence and sentence them to death by hanging.”

Imran and Norhidayah were charged with murdering Aqeef at an apartment unit in Bandar Putra, Kulai, between midnight on Dec 16, 2013 and 6.45pm on Dec 19 the same year.

They were charged at the magistrate’s court in Kulai in January 2014.

The trial began at the High Court in January last year.

A total of 13 prosecution witnesses were called, while the defence called four witnesses, including the accused. Based on a pathology report submitted to the court, Aqeef suffered blunt force trauma injuries to the head.

The abuse might have been inflicted over a period of three months.

Both the accused sobbed upon hearing the sentence.

Imran was seen shaking the hand of a man, who was in the public gallery, before he was escorted out of the courtroom.
