for the presidency of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

His supporters and those of Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who is the other candidate in the contest, have clashed online over who is more suited to the post.

A check on social media yesterday showed that Annuar still had a strong following. Many fans were disappointed with his pullout.

However, most Netizens agreed that it was high time for young blood to captain FAM.

Francis Tan said the country’s football had been in the dumps for some time.

“TMJ (Tunku Ismail) can’t possibly do worse. He can resurrect the walking corpse that is Malaysian football.”

Kesavan Kandasamy congratulated Tunku

Ismail and said Malaysians were looking forward to changes in Malaysian football.

Joe C said: “Looking forward to TMJ (Tunku Ismail) making Malaysia the Asian Tiger of Football! Here’s to World Cup 2022.”

Leman Talib said: “No more big talk. Time to walk the talk. Time to produce results.”

Kurdt Liew Koben said politicians should not hold positions in sports associations as they should look after the welfare of their constituents.

Annuar’s decision to pull out of the race paves the way for Tunku Ismail to be elected unopposed at the FAM Congress today.

The other candidates — Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and FAM Integrity Committee chairman Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat — had withdrawn from the contest much earlier.

Annuar is also the adviser to the Kelantan Football Association and former deputy FAM president.

Tunku Ismail is the owner of the Johor Darul Ta’zim Football Club and former Johor Football Association president.
