Seniors leave Frost wanting

-

THE Malaysia Open was a disappointment for some as World No 1 Lee Chong Wei failed to capture his 12th title in Kuching on Sunday as five-time world champion Lin Dan of China finally the elusive crown.

Chong Wei didn’t seem too troubled by the defeat but BA of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten

Frost had more to ponder about as other top national shuttlers barely showed up.

“Our top entries did not perform,” lamented

Frost.

“Goh Jin Wei (women’s singles) is still fighting to return after recovering from an injury while Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) probably should not have played at all as she still hasn’t recovered from hers.

“Our men’s doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong did not even hit the high note.”

Jin Wei, 17, playing in her first tournament since the Malaysia Masters in January, managed to clear the first stage but was easy meat for last year’s world junior champion Chen Yufei of China in the following round.

Rio Olympic Games silver medallists Chan Peng Soon-Liu Ying and V Shem-Wee Kiong did not even make it past the first round.

The seniors aside, Frost saw some hope in the others.

“Apart from this, I think we had many good underlying results, Cheam June Wei (men’s singles), Lim Yin Fun and Soniia Cheah (women’s singles) had a pretty good outing.

“Our two men’s doubles Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen also did reasonably well to make the second round and played strong matches. Yew Sin-Ee Yi beating the Danish pair (Mads Conrad Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding) was very good.

“Both our women’s doubles (Vivian Hoo Kah Mun-Woon Khe Wei and Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean) also did well other than winning their matches.”
