‘PPRs solve housing woes of low-income group’
JASIN: People’s Housing Projects (PPRs) are a catalyst for economic development of a state, with the low-income group assured of affordable housing, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak here yesterday.
He said such projects should not mean the country was perceived as a Third World nation, but instead a progressive one where all levels of society benefited from economic growth.
He said such projects, under the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry, were aimed at the low-income group and was the manifestation of strong nation-building, which provides homes that are affordable to the Bottom 40 per cent (B40) group.
Speaking ahead of handing over keys to residents of a PPR in Tehel, Najib said the project exemplified how the government addressed the issue of housing for the low-income group.
“In which other country in the world would you find the government providing huge subsidies for housing?
“PPR Tehel sees subsidies of up to RM125,000 provided for each home, which is estimated to cost RM160,000.
“This means owners have to pay only RM35,000.”
Present were Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.
Najib said part of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government’s promise to boost economic development in Malacca was to provide PPRs and affordable homes for the people.
“This is the BN government’s sincere effort for the people. The proof is there in the numbers.
“The number of PPRs in Malacca is the highest, while in Penang, you will find the least of such projects.
“The opposition will continue to chide us, but 500 PPR homes are here before you, built at a cost of RM80 million.”
Najib later wrapped up his oneday working visit to Malacca with a closed-door meeting at the chief minister’s residence in Seri Bendahara before leaving the state via Malacca International Airport.
