KOTA SAMARAHAN: Aini Roslan has always wanted to work in a big city like Kuala Lumpur to widen her knowledge and gain experience.

She finally got her wish when she was offered a job as a barista with The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at the 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M) Open Interview programme here.

“I have just completed my diploma in tourism and was looking forward to gain some working experience before deciding to further my studies,

“It was really unexpected to get an offer immediately after a 10-minute interview.

“They offered me a six-month training programme in one of the outlets in Kuala Lumpur, with a basic salary of RM1,400, accommodation and meal allowances of RM550.

“Apart from that, the company will also pay for my ticket to fly there,” she said.

“It was a great opportunity and I shouldn’t be choosy. Furthermore, food and beverage are part of tourism,” she added.

The 21-year-old fresh graduate of Universiti Teknologi Mara here believed that she could learn more about coffee and other beverages in the job, as well as enhance her communication skills and confidence.

Jeareni Presalla, 32, who graduated in 2011, was searching for a job that suited her qualification.

“I’m an education degree holder (majoring in economics) but I’m working as a cashier. So, when I heard about the SL1M event, I decided to come.

“I submitted my resume to a few employers and I hope I could get a better job soon. Besides, some of the big corporate groups, such as Petronas, Celcom and Maybank, had also set up booths here. So, I will try to get information from them.”

Jeareni said the event should be held more often in Sarawak as it was really a great platform to gather employers and jobseekers.

Arquilyn Augustine, a Universiti Malaysia Sarawak student, took the opportunity to gather information on careers that she could choose after graduating.

“I’m not here to look for a job because I’m still studying. But I'm here to get updated on the top positions and vacancies available in the market, their criteria and requirement as well as get to know more companies in the state,” she said.

Arquilyn also learned how to prepare an interesting resume through the event’s motivation seminar and career talks.

The 20-year-old student is looking forward for next SL1M Open Interview event.
