Party will file writ to quash action against Pujut rep

SARAWAK DAP will challenge the state legislative assembly’s decision to disqualify its Pujut assemblyman, Dr Ting Tiong Choon, in court.
State chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the party would file a writ within a month to quash last week’s decision to remove Dr Ting from the state assembly.
“We (Sarawak DAP) unanimously agree that legal action should be taken against the state legislative assembly.
“This is not a case involving Dr Ting himself or DAP but it is an assault on our country’s democratic system,” he said after chairing an emergency meeting on the matter here, yesterday.
Chong claimed the motion moved against Dr Ting and his disqualification as Pujut assemblyman were against the principle of separation of powers.
“This is against the rule of natural justice and the fundamental structure of our constitution.
“So, we must defend it,” he said.
Last Friday, the state legislative assembly disqualified Dr Ting as Pujut assemblyman after a motion was moved by state International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh, who is also Bawang Assan assemblyman.
Wong had alleged that Dr Ting held dual citizenship and that the latter had been declared a bankrupt in Australia.
