FITNESS and weight loss ambitions often do not tie in with work schedules and the hectic pace of the city. Thus, there is a need for compact, efficient, cost-effective and time-friendly programmed training to fit such lifestyles.

That led to former top duathlete and polar explorer Shahrom Abdullah to introduce the SA Bike spinning class which soon evolved into both a popular product and as a social gathering among customers of his bike shop in Jalan Damai Raya 3, Cheras.

“Firstly the spinning classes help with getting beginners accustomed to their new bikes. They learn how to use the gears correctly and with the proper technique,” said Shahrom, who recently set off on an expedition of the North Pole, having completed a similar tour of the South Pole last year.

“For those who have tight schedules but need to fit in a proper workout, this is also ideal to help programme a weight-loss regime, to improve fitness and to maintain fitness levels,” he added.

Spinning classes involve high intensity interval workouts with bicycles affixed to stationary trainers.

The classes are held at SA Bike at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (usually between 45 minutes and an hour) at just RM20 per session.

“We provide the trainers, but the limit is for eight riders per session, so those interested will have to call first to book their slots,” said Shahrom.

“You only need to bring your own bike, shoes and suitable cycling attire.”

Shahrom said thus far the classes have been packed with requests for more, leading him to offer group spinning sessions at customers’ premises.

“We also conduct sessions at customers’ premises. For example for some companies where a number of staff are interested, we can conduct the classes at their premises, but this has to be pre-arranged,” said Shahrom.

“This is an ideal way to fit in a good mid-week workout for those with busy schedules and to keep the legs spinning before the weekend, when these cycling enthusiasts usually have rides or competitions planned.

“So, instead of trying to spend hours during the week. We fit in a higher intensity workout into a 45-minute or one-hour programme, which is more efficient and less of a burden on your schedule. Believe me, you will burn a lot of calories.”

Apart from spinning classes, SA Bike is also a popular haunt for cycling enthusiasts in the city, particularly for bike servicing. The outlet also carries the Cannondale line of bikes apart from other gear, attire and accessories.
