GOH V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong must look at ways to improve their quality if they wish to shine at the World Championships in Glasgow this August. The Malaysian No 1 men’s doubles suffered a dip in form since winning the World Super Series Finals in Dubai last year. They failed to live up to expectation in the Sudirman Cup in Gold Coast, Australia where Malaysia were shown the exit by Japan in the quarter-finals.

With two months to go before the world meet, doubles coach Jeremy Gan believes that the pair can still regain their form if they remain focused and not be distracted.

“Prior to the Sudirman Cup, Wee Kiong picked up a knee injury which affected our pair’s preparation.

“In fact, Wee Kiong was not supposed to play in the mixed team event, but they were the best pair we had. Against Germany in the group stage, I thought they did well.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong with V Shem-Wee Kiong. They just need to focus hard and improve their quality,” said Jeremy, who assured that there will not be a split in the partnership of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallists anytime soon.

It is learnt, however, that Wee Kiong has yet to fully recover from his injury and could pull out of the Indonesia Open next week.

“We don’t know yet, we will have to wait and see. As of now, our plan with the pair remains the same. I don’t see why we should split them.

“Our main goal this year is to have V ShemWee Kiong do well at the World Championships,” added Jeremy.

Following the Indonesia Open in Jakarta, V Shem-Wee Kiong are expected to compete in the Australian Open on June 20-25.
