Malaysian duo in Wichita finals

-

SIN Li Jane and Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman are on course to become the first Malaysian to win a title in the United States’ Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour.

They reached the stepladder finals of the Wichita Open on Saturday.

Li Jane, 25, secured her spot as the top seed in the June 25 final after winning Group B at the Northrock Lanes.

With four wins, one draw and one defeat, Li Jane chalked up 5,504 pinfalls, including an accumulation of 24 games from previous rounds. Safiyah amassed 5,257 pinfalls to finish top in Group A.

American bowler Liz Johnson, a 16-time PWBA Tour champion and Colombia’s Juliana Franco are the other two who will make up the four-woman final after coming through the playoffs.

“I am so happy to be the top seed. It can’t get any better than this. I’m just one match away from winning it,” said Li Jane, who will be making her third TV Finals after finishing second at the Greater Detroit Open and fifth at the USBC Queens last year.

“I really want to win it having failed in the last two attempts. Let’s hope for Sofy (Safiyah) to make it an all Malaysian final. It would be a proud moment for our country.”

An excited Safiyah, who will face the winner of the match between Liz and Juliana, said: “I’m really looking forward to the final. Although I have played in so many stepladder finals before , this is going to be extra special.”
