NATIONAL URBANISATION POLICY 2 (NUP2)

-

Rapid urban growth has posed new challenges which resulted in the need for a more systematic, planned and effective urban planning as well as management towards a harmonious urban environment and community wellbeing.

The potential development of an urban area should be properly planned in line with technological changes and global challenges to maximise its contribution to national economic growth. The urban sprawl issue in Malaysia can be solved with NUP2. In 2025, a total of 314 cities in Malaysia will have a clear urban boundary thus solving the problem of urban sprawl and public facilities provisions. Under this policy, no one will be left behind. Everyone will have access to facilities and amenities within 400-metre radius which will indirectly reduce transport movement. An efficient and affordable public transport system will further reduce the living cost and carbon footprint.

NUP2 is a policy to guide and coordinate sustainable urban planning and development with emphasis on a balanced development physically, environmentally, socially, and economically. NUP2 has been formulated to continue the strategies and actions of the first NUP which was reviewed in 2014. It also incorporates the latest national policy of the government and addresses the current urban issues.
