PAS severed its ties with DAP after realising that it was being bullied by a party that was running down other partners to achieve its own political ambitions, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday.

On the other hand, he said, the principles and struggles of Umno, which championed the dignity of Muslims and Islam, had made the party likeable to Pas.

He said Pas had seen Umno from the aspect of welfare and administration, which profited Muslims greatly.

“We have our differences of opinion but the government under Umno has its principle of struggle and they (Pas) see our struggle as leaning towards the importance of Muslim dignity.

“Pas has had enough of DAP, it was bullied when it was with DAP, so much so it gave up and ran away,” he said before breaking fast at Masjid Kampung Pering in Kodiang yesterday.

At the event, Najid launched the eigth phase of the National Street Lights Project, spearheaded by the Rural and Regional Development Ministry in collaboration with Tenaga Malaysia Bhd.

He said a total of 8,093 street lights were installed in 15 parliamentary constituencies in Kedah, including 96 villages in Jerlun.

Najib said Barisan Nasional was able to deliver the development and provide various social safety net programmes to the people because of the political stability and good governance practised by the government.

“For the first quarter of this year, we have recorded 5.6 per cent economic growth and if we are able to sustain this, Malaysia will emerge as the country with the best economic growth.

“Through this growth, we will be able to bring more development and redistribute the nation’s wealth to the people.”
