Pas to contest all seats in Kedah
ALOR STAR: Pas is set to lock horns with former allies PKR and DAP after announcing its decision to contest all 15 parliamentary and 36 state seats in Kedah in the upcoming 14th General Election.
State Pas commissioner Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Syeikh Fakhrurazi said he expected the possibility of three-cornered fights against Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan in seven parliamentary and 12 state seats in Kedah.
He said the decision was made following the Pas Syura Council’s decision in May to terminate the Islamic party’s tahaluf siyasi (political cooperation) with PKR.
“The decision to contest all state and parliamentary seats in Kedah is, however, subject to approval from the Pas national leadership,” he said after attending Kedah Pas’ Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house event here yesterday.
In the 2013 general election, Pas contested in eight parliamentary and 24 state seats in Kedah, winning nine state seats and one parliamentary seat.
However, Pas lost the Pengkalan Kundor state seat after its assemblyman, Datuk Phahrolrazi Mohd Zawawi, left the party for Parti Amanah Negara (PAN).
Fakhruddin did not discount the possibility of Pas fielding nonMuslim candidates to contest the two state seats held by DAP, Derga and Kota Darul Aman.
He added that Kedah Pas had submitted its list of candidates to the Syura Council for evaluation, adding that 50 per cent of the candidates were new faces.
BN currently holds 20 seats in the 36-seat Kedah state assembly, while Pas holds eight, followed by PKR (4), DAP (2) and PAN (1).
The ruling government also won 10 parliamentary seats in Kedah while PKR won four, followed by Pas with one seat.
