KISONA IN THE GROOVE
Under-21 national champion wins Malaysia International Series title
S. KISONA bagged her third title of the year yesterday when she came out tops in the women’s singles final of the Malaysia International Series in Putrajaya. The 19-year-old reigning Under-21 national champion upset top seed and teammate Lee Ying Ying 16-21, 21-15, 21-17.
Kisona, who also won the Victor International Series in May, is now hoping to break into the world top 50 by the end of the year.
“To be honest my preparation for this tournament was not great, so I am very happy to win my second international title this year.
“I still have a lot to improve on and now under coach Tey Seu Bock and Rony (Agustinus), I hope to become better.
“I have been struggling with injuries so my main goal is to strengthen my legs. I want to be a more complete player and break into the world top 50 by the end of the year,” said Kisona who underwent knee surgery in 2014.
Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles, Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi claimed their second title this year with a 21-16, 21-17 win over Thailand’s Kittipak DubthukNatcha Saengchote in the final.
Fie Cho-Jing Yi who were only paired this year, also won the Victor International Series.
In the men’s singles, 11th seed Cheam June Wei failed to get the better of Singaporean Loh Kean Yew, losing 21-19, 2114 in 33 minutes.
