THE families of those involved in the 1985 Memali incident will be brought to meet Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to request a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to probe into the incident.
Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the party’s legal team would set up the meeting between the families and Zahid, who is also home min- ister, as soon as pos- sible.
“Pas established a legal team consisting of Pas legal experts during its central committee meeting last night (Sunday). The team will handle all matters related to the families, which include taking them to meet the deputy prime minister.
“This meeting (between the affected families and the deputy prime minister) is important to enable the RCI to be carried out soon, considering that the Memali tragedy happened 32 years ago,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Takiyuddin, who is also Kota Baru member of parliament, said Pas supported the government’s willingness to form the RCI to investigate the tragedy that happened on Nov 19, 1985, as it was in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
He also said Pas hoped that once the RCI was set up, it would clear all confusion and defend those affected.
It was reported that the government was ready to form the RCI to investigate the Memali incident, which left 18 people dead.
Zahid had said the RCI would be formed if there were requests from people or organisations that had links to the incident.
