Chong to star in China-made film

- By Tahir Alhamzah

NOT long after he caught the attention of Malay television audiences, actor and singer Alvin Chong is hopeful that his international venture will take him higher.

In June, he flew to Guangzhou, China, for the filming of Reunion Romance. The film is a joint venture production between a Chinese and Malaysian company, Jensom Ng Productions.

“For someone who is new in the industry, this is an exciting project for me.

“I got the part through an old friend, whom I knew in Taiwan,” said Chong, 26, who played a supporting role in last year’s drama Suri Hati Mr Pilot.

In the new film, he is not only a main character, but also the only Malaysian. The rest are from China and Hong Kong.

“In the film, the script is in Mandarin and Cantonese.

“Although both are spoken in Malaysia, in Guangzhou, the language and dialect are spoken differently.”

Reunion Romance will be screened in Guangzhou next year before it opens in Hong Kong.

Chong was told that the film would reach Malaysian cinemas pending feedback from the box office in China.

He said he had received another offer to star in a film in China.

“At the end of this year, I am heading back there. I am waiting for confirmation and dates from the said production.”

He recently wrapped up filming for The House S4 and is now filming Awak Suka Saya Tak? , a 16episode drama directed by Raja Ahmad Alauddin.

He will play the lead role opposite actress Emma Maembong, and once again take on a role of a muallaf (Muslim convert).

“I am not worried about being labelled a stereotypical actor. Who am I to be choosy about the roles offered? “As long as I am doing my job well, people can say what they want.”

Awak Suka Saya Tak? will air on Astro Ria next month.
