Old boys win the battle
THE second annual Dr R.D. Naidu Challenge Trophy cricket match between Bukit Mertajam High School Old Boys and SM Tinggi Bukit Mertajam ended with the latter (the old boys) winning by seven wickets at the SK Stowell Rees Oval in Seberang Perai Tengah
The tournament was inaugurated last year with the challenge trophy being named after a former principal of Bukit Mertajam High School (BMHS) Dr. R.D. Naidu, who not only served at the school as its principal for a long time but his support for sports, especially cricket and rugby was simply awesome.
SM Tinggi Bukit Mertajam (SMTBM), formerly known as BMHS, were represented by the school’s cricketers who had won the Penang Schools Sports Council's inter school Under-18 championship. The same team also represented the state at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council cricket championship and were joint champions with Kuala Lumpur.
The BMHS Old Boys alumni were as represented by players who are now residing all over the country.
SMTBM won the toss and opted to bat in the 15-over match, scoring 65 runs for the loss of three wickets while the Old Boys passed the score in 13.3 overs for the loss of three wickets. The BMHS Old Boys won the competition by seven wickets.
Top scorers for SMKTBM were the captain Dheevash Roshan with 23 runs from 28 balls and Marcus with 19 runs from 31 balls (not out) while the top bowler for the Old Boys team was P. Vadamalai with one wicket for seven runs in three overs.
The top scorers for the BMHS Old Boys were Glifford Albones with 23 runs in 15 balls (retired) and Joseph with 10 runs in 12 balls, while the top bowlers for SMTBM was Krish with three runs for the loss of one wicket in two overs. K. Kandiah
