‘AZHAR HAS HEAVY RESPONSIBILITY’
New FGV chairman should resolve issues, protect interests of shareholders, Felda settlers, says Umno Youth deputy chief
UMNO Youth has urged Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid to give his full commitment in carrying out his duties as the new Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV) chairman.
Its deputy chief, Senator Khairul Azwan Harun, said this was because Azhar shouldered the heavy responsibility of protecting the interests of FGV’s shareholders and Felda settlers.
Azhar’s appointment as FGV chairman was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Sept 8.
“If there are any issues or problems (in FGV), we hope Azhar resolves them instead of running away just like how he left MRT Corp (Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn
Bhd) by repeatedly using integrity as an excuse,” Khairul said in a statement yesterday.
Recently, Azhar said he would do his best to turn around FGV while adding value to the global agricultural and agri-commodities company.
“The first thing to do is to restore confidence in the company and also to make sure that everything is done the right way.
“So, if there are any grey areas, we need to sort them out.
“I also want to make sure that we resolve the issue related to the
chief executive officer as quickly as possible,” he said in a Bernama report.
Prior to being appointed as FGV chairman, Azhar was the group managing director of Malakoff Corp Bhd.
From 2011 to 2014, Azhar was the chief executive officer of MRT Corp before he resigned following a site accident, which killed three workers in Kota Damansara on Aug 18 in 2014.
Azhar had then said that he was taking personal responsibility for the incident as it was the correct thing to do.
Azhar took over the FGV post replacing acting chairman Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob.
Sulaiman was brought to replace Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad on June 19.
FGV is a public-listed company whose largest shareholder is the Federal Land Development Authority.
