‘Video to educate African community, not moral police’

-

PETALING JAYA: The man in a video acting as moral police at a mamak restaurant in Flora Damansara here clarified that it was not his intention to gain popularity from the recording.

Mohamed Farith Mohamed Jamal, 37, said he was just a spokesman in the video.

“The programme was headed by Mohd Najib Jalil, a resident representative.

“There were about 50 residents who joined the community service briefing on the African residents here on Thursday.”

Farith said there had been a lot of social problems in the area.

“We have been facing social problems that are linked to the African community, as many of them were drinking in the public, abusing drugs and engaging in prostitution.

“The drunkards tend to sleep at staircases and urinate at public facilities, as well as disturb public order in the area.

“In terms of prostitution, it is done openly by Thai and African girls who attract African men residing in this area.”

Farith said after the video went viral on social media, the committee had received positive feedback from residents.

“The residents are concerned about their safety and that’s why we conducted the programme to educate them (Africans) not to misbehave in public areas.”

Najib said there were 10,000 people living in Flora Damansara and 20 per cent of them were Africans.

“We have to do something to curb the social problems.

“We don’t want our family members to be affected by these issues.”

Najib said what the committee did was for the benefit of the residents, regardless of race, religion and origin.

“We are not acting as

moral police.

“In fact, we will lodge a report to the authorities via the residents’ association to take further action and investigate the matter.”
