Fifth prequel in the works

-

NEW YORK: The pool of potential Game of Thrones prequels has expanded, and the latest concept will come from core members of the Westeros brain trust.

As HBO’s most successful show ever enters its homestretch, the network has begun developing prequels set in other parts of the vast universe of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels, which are the basis for Game of Thrones.

In May, HBO said writers were working on four pilot scripts, all or none of which could eventually turn into series.

This week, details emerged about a fifth concept being developed by Martin and Bryan Cogman, a co-executive producer for Game of Thrones, Martin confirmed on his blog.

“Truth be told, we’ve had five scripts in various stages of development for months,” he wrote. “But now at last all the deals are signed.”

Entertainment Weekly broke the news about Cogman, who has been with of Thrones since its first season. He joined the production as an assistant show creators David Benioff and D Weiss, becoming one of the series’s m t prolific writers. He has written mo e episodes than anyone besides Benio f and Weiss. He also wrote a compan n book to the show’s early seasons.

“He has also been GOT’s ‘Keeper o the Lore’, the guy who knew the canon better than anyone (except me, though sometimes I am not even sure about that),” Martin wrote.

No details have been released about the new Game of Thrones shows, which would be set before the current series and thus include none of the current cast. Benioff and Weiss had said they would not be involved in of the series, though they, like Ma would be executive producers. NY
