RTD PLANNING A REBRAND

- ARMAN AHMAD cbt@nst. com. my

THE Road Transport Department (RTD) is embarking on a rebrand and is keen on improving its administrative practices. Bernama reported earlier this week that new RTD director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Khalid said he would review the department’s systems and procedures to decide whether they had “inconvenienced the rakyat”.

On the list of to-dos is raising the RTD’s level of performance and shaping it into a top-notch road transport enforcement body within the Asean region. “This does not mean that the department was problematic. We (RTD) are good and we want to bring ourselves higher,” he said.

With the new director-general at the helm, the road transport authority also plans to have better corporation with police force and other local authorities.

Perhaps, one way to help its rebrand is to have more officers like Nur Syafiqah Azaman, 23, who went viral in a video recently.

A million people viewed the video of her explaining the process of car ownership transfer procedure to two students from Shandong, China, in fluent Mandarin.

The 37-second video was shared through WhatsApp and Facebook.

Nur Syafiqah said the two students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) — Sun Wen Xuan, 18, and Zhai Qin Xing, 19 — recently bought a car to move about while studying in the country and wanted to transfer its ownership but met with difficulties as both of them do not speak fluent English or Malay.

Meanwhile, state RTD director Shahrul Azhar Md Dali said it is a bonus for the department to have multilingual staff like Syafiqah.

“I encourage the staff, especially those at the customer service division, to learn languages such as Mandarin or Tamil,” said Shahrul. LANE CLOSURES ON AKLEH FROM SEPT 22 TO NOV 15 Regular motorists of the AmpangKuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) should be mindful that parts of the 7.7 km-long highway will be closed from September 22 to November 15 for the Sungai Bunus Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) project being carried out by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Bernama reported.

The highway will be closed from Friday until Monday from 11pm until 4am, while temporary closures are from Monday until Friday from 10am until 3pm daily, said DID in a statement.

Lanes affected are the AKLEH exit to Jalan Tun Razak and from Jalan Tun Razak into the highway. To avoid traffic congestion, motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys ahead of the AKLEH closure.
